The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is a civil society campaign for a global treaty that would end new fossil fuel exploration and expansion, phase out existing production in line with the global commitment to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and accelerate the transition towards using sustainable energy sources. The Treaty aims to be a complementary mechanism to the Paris Agreement by directly addressing the fossil fuel industry and putting the just transition at its core.
The Treaty has already been endorsed by a large number of organizations, businesses, and local governments. The Vatican, Nobel laureates, academics, researchers, activists, and municipal governments are all in support. It also includes a program to create a standalone Global Registry of Fossil Fuels to ensure transparency and accountability of production and reserves. The goal is for the coal, oil, and gas industries to limit their emissions, ultimately helping to solve the climate crisis.
In September 2022, Vanuatu became the world's first nation to formally call for the passage of the Treaty.
